Advice from the Shaykh

Notes by a Murid ~ Murid Session in Maryland USA, December 2009

The Shaykh said that we are not expected to be perfect and Allah knows this, but we try ourbest. We should do our Daily Wird with istighfar (i.e. seeking forgiveness from Allah) and sincerity, and there is a key point that he wants us to drill into our minds: Do not ever doubt that you are forgiven. Allah is closer to us than our jugular vein and we must have confidence and trust in Him.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (sallallahu Alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam), who said that the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) said: Allah the Almighty said: “I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; And if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.”

It is very important to keep up with the things the Shaykh has told us to do, i.e. daily wird, weekly awrad…etc. The more spiritually cleansed you are, the better you will feel. Allah always does what is best for you, so never think badly. Always trust in Allah, He will choose what is best for you. Do not be frustrated with Allah. Do not be suggestive in your du’a, stay away from “why” because that is suggesting you know better than Allah. But ask and beg and trust in Allah. Actively remind yourself that Allah will bring you through it.
Have yaqin (certainty) that Allah is close and with you, and that He will grant you what you want. If you make a mistake, do not stay in the ditch – make istighfar and trust that Allah will forgive you, even if you do it again and again and again, not hundreds of times but millions of times. Do not ever lose hope in Allah. Combine sincerity with istighfar, and trust that you will be forgiven.

If someone points you to the dunya, they have cheated you. If someone points you to your deeds, they have put hardship on you. If someone points you to Allah, they have advised you. This does not mean you that should not do good deeds. You should. But your reliance should not be on them.
